Core Transit Extends Youth Fare-Free Program with Support from Local Partners

Getting to school. Getting to practice. Getting to a first job, a friend’s house, or a place that helps shape the future. At Core Transit, we see every day how transportation plays a direct role in helping our youth riders build independence and stay connected to the moments that matter most.
We are proud to announce the extension of our Youth Fare-Free program for an additional year, ensuring that riders 18 and under can continue to travel at no cost through the end of the winter 2026-2027 season. This next phase of the program is made possible through the support and partnership of the Town of Gypsum, City of Leadville, and Lake County, whose shared commitment to youth mobility is helping expand access across the region.
We first introduced the Youth Fare-Free program in late 2024 through a State of Colorado grant aimed at expanding access to transit. Over that first year, the impact was clear. Students gained independence, families experienced greater flexibility, and transit became a reliable part of daily life for many in our community.
When the initial funding period ended in fall 2025, we recognized the value this program had created, and our Board of Directors made the decision to continue offering fare-free rides through the end of the Winter 2026 season.
Now, thanks to the generosity of our partners, that commitment continues.
“Keeping youth in our Valley connected to school, activities, and social opportunities is important to the Town of Gypsum,” says Jeremy Rietmann, Gypsum Town Manager. “We recognize this as a community benefit, and we are pleased to partner with Core Transit to continue providing free bus service to local youth and help ensure transportation is not a barrier.”
This collaboration is especially meaningful in Gypsum and Leadville, the only areas within our system where fares are required. By stepping forward to support this program, both partners are helping ensure that cost is not a barrier for young riders who rely on these connections.
“For many families in Leadville and across Lake County, traveling to Eagle County is a part of everyday life,” says Laurie Simonson, Leadville City Administrator. “This program helps ensure our youth don’t have to rely on long drives to stay connected, giving them a reliable way to reach opportunities and move more independently across the region.”
The benefit extends beyond those who live in Gypsum and Leadville, also supporting riders from fare-free areas who travel into these communities for activities, school, social connections, or spending time at places like My Future Pathways, where they can explore career opportunities and build skills for the future
“Ensuring reliable, cost-free transportation for youth strengthens access to education, recreation, and community programs,” said Candace Bryans, Lake County Manager. “This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting the development and well-being of young people throughout Lake County.”
The continuation of the Youth Fare-Free program reflects what’s possible when we come together with a shared purpose. Alongside the Town of Gypsum, Lake County, and the City of Leadville, we are strengthening connections, supporting our community, and reaffirming our commitment to reliable transportation for everyone.
